Sunan Ibn Majah 2639 (Book 21, Hadith 25) #31993
Blood Money for Fetus

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ruled that the blood money for a fetus is a slave, male or female, regardless of whether it has eaten, drunk, shouted or cried.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah ruled concerning a fetus that (the blood money) was a slave, male and female. The one against whom this verdict was passed said: ' Should we pay blood money for one who neither ate, drunk, shouted, nor cried, (at the moment of birth)? One such as this should be overlooked '. The Messenger of Allah said: 'This man speaks like a poet. (But the blood money for a fetus is) a slave, male, or female'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect all life regardless its stage ; Accept rulings from religious authorities ; Compensate victims fairly and justly .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the ruling of the Prophet Muhammad regarding blood money for a fetus. According to this hadith, if someone kills an unborn baby then they must pay blood money in the form of a slave - either male or female. This ruling was made despite objections from people who argued that since an unborn baby does not eat, drink, shout or cry then it should be overlooked and no compensation should be paid. However, the Prophet Muhammad rejected this argument and said that such people speak like poets. This hadith teaches us to respect all life regardless of its stage and to accept rulings from religious authorities even if we do not agree with them at first glance.
