Punishment for Alcohol Consumption

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised that if someone drinks alcohol, they should be whipped. If they continue to drink, then the punishment should be increased until it reaches the point of execution.

It was narrated from Mu'awiyah bin Abu Sufyan that the Messenger of Allah said: "If they drink (again), then whip them. If they drink (again), then whip them. If they drink (again), then whip them. If they drink (again), then kill them".
حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ، عَنْ ذَكْوَانَ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِذَا شَرِبُوا الْخَمْرَ فَاجْلِدُوهُمْ ثُمَّ إِذَا شَرِبُوا فَاجْلِدُوهُمْ ثُمَّ إِذَا شَرِبُوا فَاجْلِدُوهُمْ ثُمَّ إِذَا شَرِبُوا فَاقْتُلُوهُمْ

The hadith narrated by Mu'awiyah bin Abu Sufyan states that if someone drinks alcohol, they should be punished with a whip.
