Returning Lost Items

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of returning lost items to their rightful owners and not taking advantage of them.

It was narrated that Suwaid bin Ghafalah said: "I went out with Zaid bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabi'ah, and when we were at 'Udhaib, I found a whip. They said to me: 'Throw it away,' but I refused. When we came to Al-Madinah I went to Ubayy bin Ka'b and told him about that. He said: 'You did the right thing. I found one hundred dinar that had been lost at the time of the Messenger of Allah , and I asked him about it. He said, "Announce it for a year". So I Announced it, and I did not find anyone who recognized it. He said: "Remember the features of its bag and strap, and how many it contains, then announce it for a year. If someone comes who describes it with those features, (give it to him), otherwise it is like your own property".

QUICK LESSONS:
Return any lost item you find back to its rightful owner instead of taking advantage or keeping them without informing anyone else first .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of returning lost items to their rightful owners. It was narrated by Suwaid bin Ghafalah that he went out with Zaid bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabi'ah, and when they were at 'Udhaib, he found a whip. His companions advised him to throw it away but he refused. When they arrived in Al-Madinah, he went to Ubayy bin Ka'b and told him about it. Ubayy praised his decision as he himself had once found one hundred dinar that had been lost at the time of the Messenger of Allah and asked him what should be done with it. The Prophet instructed him to announce its presence for a year so that if anyone recognized it, they could claim ownership over it otherwise it would become his own property. This hadith teaches us that we should always return any lost item we find back to its rightful owner instead of taking advantage of them or keeping them for ourselves without informing anyone else about them first.
