Sunan Ibn Majah 2503 (Book 18, Hadith 2) #31857
Refusing Refuge to the Lost

SUMMARY: One should not give refuge to something that is lost if they themselves are also lost.

It was narrated that Mundhir bin Jarir said: "I was with my father in Bawazij and the cows came back in the evening. He saw a cow did not recognize it. He said: 'What is this?' He said: 'A cow that joined the herd'. And he issued orders that it be driven away until it disappeared from view. Then he said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "No one gives refuge to a stray animal but one who is also astray".

QUICK LESSONS:
Focus on finding your own way first before trying to help others find theirs .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that we should not help someone who is lost if we ourselves are also lost. It was narrated by Mundhir bin Jarir, who said he was with his father in Bawazij and saw a cow that did not look familiar. His father asked what it was and the people said it had joined the herd. His father then recalled a saying of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, which stated “No one gives refuge to a stray animal but one who is also astray”. This means that if you yourself are confused or do not know where you are going, then you should not try to help someone else who is in the same situation as you because it will only make matters worse for both of you. Instead, focus on finding your own way first before trying to help others find theirs.
