Sunan Ibn Majah 2462 (Book 16, Hadith 27) #31814
The Benefits of Giving Land to Others

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of helping others by giving them land and cultivating it, rather than taking a set amount in rent for it.

It was narrated that 'Amr bin Dinar said: I said to Tawus: "O Abu 'Abdur-Rahman, why do you not give up this Mukhabarah because they claim that the Messenger of Allah forbade it". He said: "O 'Amr, I help them by taking their land and cultivating it, and giving them something in return, and Mu'adh bin Jabal allowed people here to do that. The most knowledgeable of them - meaning Ibn'Abbas - told me that the Messenger of Allah did not forbid it, rather he said: 'For one you to give (land) to his brother is better than if he were to take a set amount in rent for it'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of helping others by giving them land and cultivating it instead of taking a set amount in rent for it. It was narrated that 'Amr bin Dinar said he asked Tawus why he did not give up Mukhabarah because people claimed that the Messenger of Allah forbade it. Tawus replied that he helps people by taking their land and cultivating it while giving something in return. He also mentioned that Mu'adh bin Jabal allowed people to do this and Ibn Abbas told him that the Messenger did not forbid this but rather said “For one you to give (land) to his brother is better than if he were to take a set amount in rent for it”. This hadith teaches us about the importance of generosity towards others as well as how we should help those who are less fortunate than us without expecting anything in return. It also shows us how we should be mindful when making decisions regarding our wealth or possessions so as not to cause harm or injustice towards anyone else.
