Sahih al-Bukhari 3325 (Book 59, Hadith 131) #3178
The Consequences of Keeping an Unnecessary Dog

SUMMARY: Keeping a pet dog that is not used for farm work or guarding livestock will reduce one's reward of good deeds.

Narrated Sufyan bin Abi Zuhair Ash-Shani: That he heard Allah's Messenger saying, "If somebody keeps a dog that is neither used for farm work nor for guarding the livestock, he will lose one Qirat (of the reward) of his good deeds everyday".

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep pets only when necessary like farm work or guarding livestock

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the consequences of keeping a pet dog that is not used for farm work or guarding livestock. According to this hadith, if someone keeps such a dog, they will lose one Qirat of their reward for good deeds every day. A Qirat is an amount so small that it cannot be measured and it is said to be equal to half the weight of Mount Uhud in gold. This means that if someone keeps such a pet dog, they will lose out on their rewards from Allah SWT even though they may have done many good deeds in their life. Therefore, this hadith serves as a reminder to us all about the importance of being mindful and careful with our actions and how we spend our time and energy on things which are beneficial in the eyes of Allah SWT.
