Sunan Ibn Majah 2415 (Book 15, Hadith 26) #31767
Paying Off Debts of Believers

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was willing to pay off the debts of believers who passed away and left behind wealth for their heirs.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that: if a believer died at the time of the Messenger of Allah and he had debts, the Messenger of Allah would ask: "Did he leave anything with which to off his debt?" If they said yes, then he would offer the funeral prayer for him, but if they said no, then he would say: "Pray for your companion". When Allah granted his Prophet the conquests, he said: "I am nearer to the believers than their own selves. Whoever dies owing a debt, I will pay it off for him, and whoever leaves behind wealth, it will be for his heirs".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous towards those in need , Take responsibility for one's actions even after death , Pay off debts before leaving this world .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the generosity and kindness of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is narrated that if a believer died at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he had debts, the Messenger would ask if he left anything with which to pay off his debt. If they said yes then he would offer funeral prayer for him but if they said no then he would say “pray for your companion”. When Allah granted His Prophet ﷺ conquests, He said “I am nearer to believers than their own selves” meaning that He will take care of them even after death. Therefore when a believer died owing a debt it was paid off by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself and whatever wealth was left behind was given to his heirs as inheritance according to Islamic law. This hadith teaches us about being generous towards others in need and taking responsibility for our actions even after death by paying off our debts before leaving this world so we can be relieved from any burden in the hereafter.
