Sunan Ibn Majah 2389 (Book 14, Hadith 15) #31741
Charity with Husband's Permission

SUMMARY: A woman asked her husband for permission to give her jewelry in charity, and the Prophet accepted it after confirming that she had permission.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Yahya, one of the sons of Ka'b bin Malik, from his grandfather, that : his grandmother Khairah, the wife of Ka'b bin Malik, came to the Messenger of Allah with some jewelry belonging to her and said, I am giving this in charity. The Messenger of Allah said to her: "It is not permissible for a woman to dispose of her wealth without her husband's permission. Did you ask Ka'b's permission?" She said: "Yes". So the Messenger of Allah sent for Ka'b bin Malik, her husband, and said, "Did you give Khairah permission to give her jewelry in charity?" He said: "Yes". So the Messenger of Allah accepted it from her.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek your spouse's approval before taking action

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of seeking permission from one’s spouse before giving away any wealth in charity. It is narrated by Abdullah bin Yahya from his grandfather Ka’b bin Malik that his grandmother Khaira came to the Prophet Muhammad with some jewelry belonging to her and said she wanted to give it away as charity. The Prophet asked if she had taken permission from her husband Ka’b and upon confirmation he accepted it from her. This teaches us that even when doing something good like giving away wealth in charity, we should always seek our spouse’s approval first. It also shows us how important marriage is in Islam as a relationship based on mutual respect and understanding between two people who are committed to each other for life.
