Sahih al-Bukhari 3310, 3311 (Book 59, Hadith 118) #3165
Killing Snakes According to the Prophet (ﷺ)

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to not kill snakes, except for the short-tailed or mutilated-tailed snake with two white lines on its back, as it causes abortion and makes one blind.

Narrated Abu Mulaika: Ibn 'Umar used to kill snakes, but afterwards he forbade their killing and said, "Once the Prophet pulled down a wall and saw a cast-off skin of a snake in it. He said, 'Look for the snake'.They found it and the Prophet said, "Kill it". For this reason I used to kill snakes. Later on I met Abu Lubaba who told me the Prophet said, 'Do not kill snakes except the short-tailed or mutilated-tailed snake with two white lines on its back, for it causes abortion and makes one blind. So kill it'. "

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect life & be mindful before taking action against animals like snakes .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Abu Mulaika and Ibn 'Umar teaches us that we should not kill snakes unless it is a short-tailed or mutilated-tailed snake with two white lines on its back. This type of snake can cause abortion and make one blind, so it is important to get rid of them. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was once pulling down a wall when he saw a cast off skin of a snake in it. He asked his companions to look for the snake and when they found it, he told them to kill it. This is why Ibn 'Umar used to kill snakes before he heard this hadith from Abu Lubaba which changed his opinion about killing snakes. We should take this lesson from the Prophet ﷺ that we should be careful around animals like snakes but also be mindful of their lives as well since Allah has created all creatures in balance with each other.
