Exchange of Commodities

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade the sale of certain items in exchange for the same item, and instead commanded to sell wheat for barley or vice versa.

Muslim bin Yasar and 'Abdullah bin 'Ubaid said : "Ubadah bin Samit and Mu'awiyah happened to meet, either in a church or in a synagogue'.Ubadah bin Samit narrated to them and said: 'The Messenger of Allah forbade us from selling silver for silver, gold for gold, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, and dates for dates'.I one of them said: "And salt for salt," but the other did not say it".And he commanded us to sell wheat for barley, or barley for wheat, hand-to-hand, however we wished".

QUICK LESSONS:
Trade fairly with others without taking advantage of them; Be open-minded when it comes to trading goods; Diversify investments; Follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the exchange of commodities. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade people from selling silver for silver, gold for gold, wheat for wheat, barley for barley and dates for dates. He instead commanded them to sell wheat in exchange of barley or vice versa. This hadith teaches us that it is important to diversify our investments and not put all our eggs in one basket. It also teaches us that we should be open-minded when it comes to trading goods as there are many different ways we can benefit from exchanging commodities with each other. We should also be mindful when trading goods as we should not take advantage of others by charging too much money or taking too much profit from a transaction.
