Taking Possession of Food

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to not sell food until they have taken full possession of it.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever buys food, let him not sell it until he has taken full possession of it'." (Sahih) In his narration, (one of the narrators) Abu 'Awanah said: "Ibn 'Abbas said: 'I think everything is like food"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take full possession of an item before selling it .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of taking possession of food before selling it. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised people to not sell food until they have taken full possession of it, which means that one should take ownership and control over the item before selling it. This hadith also implies that this rule applies to all items, not just food, as Ibn ‘Abbas said “I think everything is like food". This teaches us that we should be careful when buying or selling any item and make sure we are in full control over the item before transferring its ownership to someone else.
