Understanding Oaths

SUMMARY: The oaths of a person are interpreted according to how their companion understands it.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "Your oath is as your companion understands it to be".

QUICK LESSONS:
Ensure you fully understand any agreements you make with others before committing yourself to them; Be careful when making promises so your companions can clearly understand your intentions; Keep your promises; Make sure both parties involved in an agreement fully comprehend what has been agreed upon for it to be valid and binding.

EXPLANATIONS:
An oath is a promise or statement made by someone that they will do something or that something is true. This hadith explains that the interpretation of an oath depends on how the companion of the person making the oath understands it. This means that if two people make an agreement, then both parties must understand what they have agreed upon in order for it to be valid and binding. If one party does not understand what has been agreed upon, then there can be no agreement between them and any promises made will not be binding. This hadith teaches us to always ensure we fully understand any agreements we make with others before committing ourselves to them, as well as being careful when making promises so that our companions can clearly understand our intentions.
