Sunan Ibn Majah 1918 (Book 9, Hadith 74) #31270
Seeking Goodness and Protection from Evil

SUMMARY: When someone acquires a new wife, servant, or animal, they should take hold of the forelock and ask Allah for the goodness within them and seek refuge from any evil.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: that the Prophet said: "When anyone of you gets a new wife, a servant, or an animal, let him take hold of the forelock and say: Allahumma inni as'aluka min khayriha wa khayri ma jubilat 'alaihi, wa 'audhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jubilat 'alaih (O Allah, I ask You for the goodness within her and the goodness that she is inclined towards, and I seek refuge with you from the evil to which she is inclined)'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how to acquire a new wife, servant or animal in an appropriate manner. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that when we get something new such as these things, we should take hold of the forelock and make du’a to Allah for its goodness and seek refuge from any evil it may possess. This teaches us to be grateful for what we have been given by Allah and also to be mindful of our actions when dealing with others. It also reminds us that everything comes from Allah so we must always turn to Him in times of need or difficulty. We must remember that He is All-Knowing so He knows best what is good for us in this life and the Hereafter.
