Sunan Ibn Majah 1783 (Book 8, Hadith 1) #31135
Obligations for People of The Book

SUMMARY: The Prophet sent Muadh to Yemen and instructed him to call the people of the Book to bear witness that Allah is the only one worthy of worship and that he is Allah's messenger. He also instructed Muadh to tell them about their obligation of five daily prayers, charity from their wealth, and warned him not to take the best of their wealth or ignore the supplication of those who are oppressed.

'Ibn Abbas(RAH) narrated that: the Prophet send Muadh to Yemen, and said: "You are going to some people among the People of the Book. Call them to bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that I am the messenger of Allah. If they obey that, then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them five prayers every day and night. If they obey that, then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them charity (Zakat) from their wealth, to be taken from the rich and given to their poor. If they obey that, then beware of (taking) the best of their wealth. And beware of the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between and Allah".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about obligations for people among the People of The Book. It was narrated by Ibn Abbas that Prophet Muhammad sent Muadh to Yemen with instructions on how they should conduct themselves in terms of worshiping Allah alone and following his teachings. He told them they must pray five times a day and give charity from their wealth. He also warned them not to take advantage or oppress those who are less fortunate than them by taking away what little they have left. Furthermore, he reminded them not to ignore any supplications made by those who are oppressed as there is no barrier between Allah and His creation when it comes down seeking help from Him. This hadith teaches us important values such as generosity towards others in need regardless if we know them or not; it also reminds us that we should never forget our obligations towards our Creator even if we may be busy with worldly matters; lastly it teaches us humility in all aspects so we do not become arrogant or oppressive towards others due our own success or fortune in life.
