Speaking to People from a Tent

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) spoke to the people from a Turkish tent with a piece of reed matting over the door.

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri that: The Messenger of Allah observed I’tifak in a Turkish tent, over the door of which was a piece of reed matting. He pushed the mat aside, then he put his head out and spoke to the people.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي عُمَارَةُ بْنُ غَزِيَّةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ ـ اعْتَكَفَ فِي قُبَّةٍ تُرْكِيَّةٍ عَلَى سُدَّتِهَا قِطْعَةُ حَصِيرٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَأَخَذَ الْحَصِيرَ بِيَدِهِ فَنَحَّاهَا فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْقُبَّةِ ثُمَّ أَطْلَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَكَلَّمَ النَّاسَ

This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of speaking to people from inside a Turkish tent. The door of this tent was covered by a piece of reed matting, which he pushed aside before putting his head out and addressing those outside. We should not forget that our words have an impact on those who hear them and that we should always strive to speak kindly and thoughtfully.
