Fasting on the Ninth Day of Muharram

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) expressed his intention to fast on the ninth day of Muharram in addition to the year that followed.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said: "If I live until next year, I will fast the ninth day (of Muharram) too".
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ عَبَّاسِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، مَوْلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ لَئِنْ بَقِيتُ إِلَى قَابِلٍ لأَصُومَنَّ الْيَوْمَ التَّاسِعَ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ibn 'Abbas states that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) expressed his intention to fast on the ninth day of Muharram in addition to the year that followed. This is a reminder for us Muslims to follow suit and observe fasting during this month as it is one of the four sacred months mentioned in Quran. Fasting during this month has been highly recommended by Prophet Muhammad and it is believed that those who observe fasting will receive great rewards from Allah Almighty. It also teaches us about self-discipline, patience, and perseverance which are essential values for a successful life. Moreover, it reminds us about our commitment towards Allah Almighty and His teachings which should be our priority over worldly desires.
