Sunan Ibn Majah 1734 (Book 7, Hadith 97) #31086
Fasting in Gratitude for Allah's Blessings

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) found the Jews fasting on a certain day and upon inquiry, they told him that it was the day when Allah saved Musa and drowned Pharaoh. The Prophet then said that Muslims have more right to Musa than them and fasted on that day as well.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Prophet came to Al- Madinah, and he found the Jews observing a fast. He said: 'What is this?’ They said: 'This is the day when Allah saved Musa and drowned Pharaoh, so Musa fasted this day in gratitude.’ The Messenger of Allah said: 'We have more right to Musa than you do.’ So he fasted (that day) and enjoined (others) to fast it also.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of showing gratitude to Allah for His blessings. When the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) came to Madinah he found the Jews fasting on a certain day out of gratitude for when Allah saved Moses from Pharaoh. Upon inquiry they explained why they were fasting and this inspired the Prophet to fast as well in order to show his own gratitude towards Allah’s blessings. This hadith teaches us that we should always be thankful for all of our blessings from Allah and express our appreciation through acts such as fasting or prayer or any other form of worship. We should also remember how much more blessed we are than those before us who did not have access to all these modern conveniences which make life easier today.
