Sunan Ibn Majah 1701 (Book 7, Hadith 64) #31053
Fasting and Charity in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would fast and break his fast depending on the availability of food. He also encouraged charity and giving away some of what one has.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "The Messenger of Allah would enter upon me and say: 'Do you have anything (any food)?’ If we said: 'No,’ he would say: 'Then I am fasting.’ So he would continue fasting, then it we were given some food, he would break his fast". She said: "Sometimes he would fast and (then) break fast (ie, combine fasting and breaking fast in one day)". I said: "How is that?" She said: "Like the one who goes out with charity (ie, something to give in charity),and he gives some away and keeps some".

QUICK LESSONS:
Fast regularly; Give away wealth; Be generous; Have patience; Seek closeness with Allah SWT .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by 'Aishah speaks about the importance of fasting and charity in Islam. It is said that when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would enter upon her, he would ask if there was any food available, if not he would continue fasting. He also encouraged charity by saying it was like someone who goes out with something to give away but keeps some for himself as well. This teaches us that we should be generous with our wealth, even if it is little, as Allah will reward us for our efforts in giving away what we have to those who need it more than us. We should also strive to fast regularly as this is a way for us to gain closeness to Allah SWT through self-discipline and patience.
