Fasting While Travelling

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave permission to fast while travelling, but also allowed the option to break the fast.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "Hamzah Al-Aslami asked the Messenger of Allah : 'I am fasting, should I fast while traveling?’ The Messenger of Allah said: 'If you wish, then fast, and if you wish, then break your fast.’"
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: سَأَلَ حَمْزَةُ الأَسْلَمِيُّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ ـ فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَصُومُ أَفَأَصُومُ فِي السَّفَرِ؟ فَقَالَ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ إِنْ شِئْتَ فَصُمْ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَأَفْطِرْ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by 'Aishah tells us that Hamzah Al-Aslami asked the Prophet Muhammad about fasting while travelling. The Prophet Muhammad gave him permission to either fast or break his fast depending on what he wished. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible for a person who is fasting to break their fast if they are travelling and it will not be counted against them as a sin. It also teaches us that we should always seek guidance from Allah and His Messenger in all matters of life and follow their teachings with faith and trust in order for our actions to be accepted by Allah.
