Sunan Ibn Majah 1647 (Book 7, Hadith 10) #30999
Fasting in Shaban and Ramadan

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged people to fast in the month of Shaban if they wanted to, but also allowed them to wait until Ramadan began.

It was narrated from Qasim Abu 'Abdur-Rahman that he heard Mu’awiyah bin Abu Sufyan on the pulpit saying: "The Messenger of Allah used to say from the pulpit, before the month of Ramadan: 'Fasting will begin on such and such a day, but we are going to start fasting earlier, so whoever wants to start fasting earlier (ie, in Sha’ban), let him do so, and whoever wants to wait until Ramadan begins, let him do so.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Take advantage of any opportunity for worshiping Allah SWT., Strive towards righteousness & piety., Make use of discretion when it comes religious matters such as fasting.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Qasim Abu 'Abdur-Rahman tells us that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to encourage people from the pulpit before the month of Ramadan to start fasting earlier, in the month of Shaban. He gave them two options; either they could start fasting early or wait until Ramadan begins. This hadith teaches us that we should be proactive and take advantage of any opportunity we have for worshiping Allah SWT. We should not wait for a certain time or occasion before doing good deeds as it is important for us to always strive towards righteousness and piety. It also teaches us that Islam is a religion which allows flexibility and encourages its followers to make use of their own discretion when it comes to religious matters such as fasting, as long as it does not contradict Islamic teachings.
