Sunan Ibn Majah 1634 (Book 6, Hadith 202) #30986
Changes in Muslim Prayer Over Time

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how the prayer of Muslims changed over time, from looking at their feet to looking at the Qiblah.

It was narrated that Umm Salamah bint Abi Umayyah, the wife of the Prophet , said: "At the time of the Messenger of Allah , if a person stood to pray, his gaze would not go beyond his feet. When the Messenger of Allah died, if a person stood to pray, his gaze would not go beyond the place where he put his forehead when prostrating. Then Abu Bakr died and it was 'Umar (the caliph). So, when any person stood to pray his gaze would not go beyond the Qiblah. Then came the time of 'Uthman bin 'Affan, and there was Fitnah (tribulation, turmoil), and the people started to look right and left".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how Muslims have changed their prayer over time. It was narrated by Umm Salamah bint Abi Umayyah, wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. During his lifetime, when a person stood to pray they would look down at their feet and not beyond that. After he passed away and Abu Bakr became caliph, people started to look towards the direction of the Qiblah when praying instead of just their feet. Then during 'Uthman bin 'Affan's caliphate there was turmoil and people started to look around them while praying instead of just focusing on the Qiblah. This hadith teaches us that we should always focus on our prayers and not be distracted by what is going on around us or else we will lose out on its rewards.
