Sunan Ibn Majah 1541 (Book 6, Hadith 109) #30893
Attending Funerals Rewarded

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encourages people to attend funerals and offers rewards for those who do.

It was narrated from Ubayy bin Ka’b that the Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever offers the funeral prayer will have one Qirat; and whoever attends until the burial is over, will have two Qirat. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad! The Qirat is greater than this (mountain of) Uhud".

QUICK LESSONS:
Attend funerals with respect and kindness; Offer prayers at funerals; Be grateful for what you have in life; Show respect towards deceased loved ones; Have faith in Allah's promises.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Ubayy bin Kab states that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged people to attend funerals and offered rewards for those who do. He said that whoever offers the funeral prayer will receive one Qirat, which is a unit of measurement in Islamic tradition, and whoever attends until the burial is over will receive two Qirats. He then emphasized his point by swearing an oath on Allah, saying that the reward of attending a funeral is greater than Uhud mountain. This hadith teaches us about the importance of attending funerals as it is an act of kindness towards others and it also has great rewards from Allah. It also shows us how much respect we should have for our deceased loved ones as they deserve our presence at their funeral even if we cannot physically be there due to distance or other reasons. Furthermore, this hadith reminds us to be grateful for what we have in life as even something as small as a mountain can be insignificant compared to what Allah has promised us in return for good deeds such as attending funerals.
