Sunan Ibn Majah 1526 (Book 6, Hadith 94) #30878
Suicide and its Consequences

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man from the Prophet's companions who committed suicide and the Prophet did not offer his funeral prayer as an admonition for others.

It was narrated from Jabir bin Samurah that a man from among the Companions of the Prophet was wounded, and the wound caused him a great deal of pain. He went and took a spearhead, and slaughtered himself with it. The Prophet did not offer the funeral prayer for him, and that was as an admonition for others.

QUICK LESSONS:
Turn to Allah in times of difficulty, Respect life

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man from among the Companions of the Prophet who was wounded and in great pain. He took a spearhead and killed himself with it, which was considered suicide. As a consequence, the Prophet did not offer his funeral prayer as an admonishment to others that suicide is forbidden in Islam. This hadith teaches us that we should never take our own lives no matter how difficult life may seem at times, because it goes against Islamic teachings. We should also remember that Allah alone has control over our lives and He will always provide us with guidance if we turn to Him in times of difficulty.
