Sunan Ibn Majah 1523 (Book 6, Hadith 91) #30875
Funeral Prayer for Hypocrites

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) was asked to offer the funeral prayer for a hypocrite, but Allah revealed that it is not permissible to do so.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "When 'Abdullah bin Ubayy died, his son came to the Prophet and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, give me your shirt so that I may shroud him in it.’ The Messenger of Allah said: 'Notify me when he is ready (ie, when he has been washed and shrouded).’ When the Prophet wanted to offer the funeral prayer for him: 'You should not do that.’ The Prophet offered the funeral prayer for him, and the Prophet said to him: 'I have been given two choices: ".ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask not forgiveness for them.’" 9:80 Then Allah revealed: 'And never pray (the funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave.’" 9:84

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates an incident in which the son of Abdullah bin Ubayy asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to give him his shirt so he could shroud his father in it. The Prophet ﷺ agreed and when he wanted to offer the funeral prayer, Allah revealed that it is not permissible to do so for hypocrites. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful about who we pray for and how we spend our time on earth as our actions will be judged by Allah. We should strive to live a life of righteousness and piety, as this will ensure that we are forgiven by Allah in the hereafter.
