Sunan Ibn Majah 1492 (Book 6, Hadith 60) #30844
Speaking Well of the Deceased

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that speaking well of the deceased will guarantee them Paradise, while speaking badly of them will guarantee them Hell.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "A funeral passed by the Prophet and they praised (the deceased) and spoke well of him and mentioned his good characteristics. He said: '(Paradise is) guaranteed for him.’ Then another funeral passed by and they spoke badly of him and mentioned his bad characteristics, and he the Prophet said: '(Hell is) guaranteed for him. You are the witnesses of Allah on earth.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak well of those who have passed away. Mention their good characteristics. Be mindful when speaking about others. Be respectful towards those who have passed away .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that we should always speak well of those who have passed away. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said that if we praise and mention the good characteristics of a deceased person, then they are guaranteed Paradise. On the other hand, if we speak badly about them and mention their bad characteristics, then they are guaranteed Hell. We must remember that Allah is watching us at all times and He knows what is in our hearts; therefore it is important to be mindful when speaking about others. We should also remember to be kind and respectful when talking about those who have passed away as this could affect their fate in the afterlife.
