Sunan Ibn Majah 1485 (Book 6, Hadith 53) #30837
Imitating the Days of Ignorance

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saw some people who had taken off their upper garments and were walking in their shirts only. He warned them against imitating the behavior of the days of ignorance and said that he was about to supplicate against them.

It was narrated that 'Imran bin Husain and Abu Barzah said: "We went out with the Messenger of Allah to attend a funeral, and he saw some people who had cast aside their upper sheets and were walking in their shirts only. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Are you adopting the practice of the days of ignorance?’ or; 'Are you imitating the behavior of the days of ignorance? I was about to supplicate against you that you would return in a different form.’ So they put their sheets back on and never did that again".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings regarding clothing modesty; Repent for sins immediately after committing them; Avoid practices from before Islam; Respect funerals by wearing appropriate clothing; Listen to warnings given by Prophet Muhammad PBUH .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saw some people who had taken off their upper garments and were walking in their shirts only. He warned them against imitating the behavior of the days of ignorance which was a common practice before Islam came into existence. He said that he was about to supplicate against them so they put back on their sheets and never did it again. This teaches us that we should not imitate any practices from before Islam as it is considered a sin in Islam. We should also be careful with our actions as even if we do something wrong unintentionally, Allah will still punish us for it if we don't repent for our sins immediately after committing them. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us to be mindful of our clothing at all times as modesty is an important part of Islamic teachings.
