Praying Together as a Couple

SUMMARY: This hadith encourages couples to pray together and motivates them to wake each other up for prayer if one of them is not willing.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'May Allah have mercy on a man who gets up at night and prays, and wakes his wife, and she prays; and if she refuses he sprinkles water in her face. And May Allah have mercy on a woman who gets up at night and prays, and wakes her husband and he prays; and if he refuses, she sprinkles water in his face.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages couples to pray together and motivates them to wake each other up for prayer if one of them is not willing. It teaches us that praying together can bring mercy from Allah and it also shows us the importance of being considerate towards our spouses. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was encouraging couples to be supportive of each other in their religious practices by waking each other up for prayer even if one partner refuses initially. He also taught us that we should be gentle with our partners when doing so by sprinkling water on their face instead of using force or harsh words.

This hadith emphasizes the importance of praying at night as it brings mercy from Allah and strengthens the bond between spouses who are praying together. It also teaches us about being considerate towards our partners in marriage by showing kindness even when they refuse something we want them to do. Finally, it reminds us that we should always strive for peace in our relationships with others and use gentleness instead of force or harsh words when trying to get someone else’s attention or agreement on something important like prayer.
