Sunan Ibn Majah 1261 (Book 5, Hadith 459) #30613
Praying During an Eclipse

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that when the sun or moon is eclipsed, people should stand and pray.

It was narrated that Abu Mas’ud said: The Messenger of Allah said: "The sun and the moon do not become eclipsed for the death of anyone among mankind. If you see that, then stand and perform prayer".

QUICK LESSONS:
Stand up and pray during an eclipse.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when the sun or moon is eclipsed, we should stand and perform prayer. This was narrated by Abu Masud, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). An eclipse occurs when either the sun or moon is blocked from view by another celestial body. It can be a partial eclipse where only part of the sun or moon is blocked, or it can be a total eclipse where all of it is blocked from view. When this happens, Muslims are encouraged to stand up and pray in order to seek forgiveness for their sins and ask Allah for protection from any harm that may come as a result of this event. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us that an eclipse does not occur because someone has died; rather it is simply an act of Allah which we must acknowledge with prayer.
