Sunan Ibn Majah 1210 (Book 5, Hadith 408) #30562
Completing Prayers with Certainty

SUMMARY: If one is uncertain about their prayer, they should act upon what they are certain of and then prostrate twice. This will either count as a voluntary prayer or complete the prayer if it was lacking.

It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'If anyone of you is uncertain about his prayer, let him put aside uncertainty and act upon that which is certain. When he has made sure his prayer is complete, then let him prostrate twice. Then if his prayer was complete, that (extra) Rak’ah will be counted as voluntary, and if his prayer was lacking, that Rak’ah will complete his prayer, and the two prostrations will rub the Satan’s nose in the dust.’"

QUICK LESSONS:
Act upon what is certain and prostrate twice when uncertain about your prayer
EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that if we are ever uncertain about our prayers, we should act upon what we are certain of and then prostrate twice. This will either count as a voluntary prayer or complete the prayer if it was lacking. By doing this, we can ensure that our prayers are completed correctly and also rub Satan's nose in the dust by following Allah's commands. We must always strive to be sure of our prayers so that we can fulfill them properly and gain Allah's blessings in return.
