Praying Witr - A Conversation between the Prophet ﷺ and His Companions

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised Abu Bakr and 'Umar on when to pray Witr, praising Abu Bakr for wanting to be on the safe side and 'Umar for having the resolve to get up and pray.

It was narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said: "The Messenger of Allah said to Abu Bakr: 'When do you pray Witr?’ He said: 'At the beginning of the night, after 'Isha’.’ He said: 'And you, O 'Umar?’ He said: 'At the end of the night.’ The Prophet said: 'As for you, O Abu Bakr, you have seized the trustworthy handhold (ie, you want to be on the safe side), and as for you, O 'Umar, you have seized strength (ie, you are confident that you have the resolve to get up and pray Witr).’" Another chain with similar meaning.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive towards being cautious with religious obligations & have strong determination in fulfilling them . Listen carefully & respectfully towards elders' advice .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a conversation between the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions, Abu Bakr and Umar. The Prophet ﷺ asked them when they prayed witr, which is an extra prayer that Muslims perform at night after Isha prayer. Abu Bakr said he prayed it at the beginning of the night while Umar said he prayed it at the end of the night. The Prophet ﷺ praised both of them for their answers; he praised Abu Bakr for wanting to be on a safe side by praying early in case something happened that would prevent him from praying later in the night, while he praised Umar for having strong resolve to stay up late in order to pray witr. This hadith teaches us that we should strive towards being cautious with our religious obligations as well as have strong determination in fulfilling them. It also shows us how much respect we should have towards our elders by listening carefully to their advice even if it differs from ours.
