Reciting Quran During Witr Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to perform Witr and recite certain verses from the Quran.

It was narrated that Ubayy bin Ka’b said: "The Messenger of Allah used to perform Witr and recite: 'Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High.’, Al-A’la (87) 'Say: O you disbelievers!" Al-Kafirun (109) and 'Say: Allah is One".. Al-Ikhlas (112)
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَفْصٍ الأَبَّارُ، حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ، وَزُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ ذَرٍّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ يُوتِرُ بِـ ‏{سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى}‏ وَ ‏{قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ}‏ وَ ‏{قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ‏}‏

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was known for his devotion to prayer, especially the Witr prayer which is a voluntary prayer that is performed at night. During this prayer, he would recite certain verses from the Quran such as Al-Ala, Al-Kafirun and Al-Ikhlas. These verses are all about glorifying Allah and affirming His Oneness. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to make our prayers meaningful by reciting verses from the Quran during them. We should also take time out of our day to remember Allah and thank Him for His blessings in our lives.
