Sunan Ibn Majah 1169 (Book 5, Hadith 367) #30521
The Significance of Witr Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith encourages people to perform Witr prayer as it is loved by Allah and He is unique and there is nothing like Him.

'Ali bin Abu Talib said: "Witr is not definite (obligatory) nor is it like your prescribed prayers. But the Messenger of Allah prayed Witr, then he said: 'O people of the Qur’an! Perform Witr, for Allah is Witr* and He loves the odd (numbered).’" * Meaning 'one' which is the first of the odd numbers; He is unique, and there is nothing like Him, similar or equal.

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray with sincerity .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages people to perform the Witr prayer, which is a voluntary prayer that can be performed after Ishaa’ or before Fajr. It consists of an odd number of rak’ahs, usually three. In this hadith, Ali bin Abu Talib explains that although Witr isn't obligatory like the prescribed prayers, Prophet Muhammad still prayed it and encouraged others to do so as well. He also said that Allah loves the odd numbers because He Himself is one and unique; there's nothing like Him or equal to Him. This teaches us that we should strive for uniqueness in our lives and not follow what everyone else does blindly; instead we should think for ourselves and make decisions based on our own understanding of right from wrong. We should also remember that Allah loves when we pray with sincerity, even if it's just a voluntary prayer such as Witr.
