Sunan Ibn Majah 986 (Book 5, Hadith 184) #30338
Reciting Quran During Prayer and Avoiding Fitnah

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of reciting certain verses from the Quran during prayer and avoiding causing fitnah (tribulation) by speaking without knowledge.

It was narrated that Jabir said: "Mu’adh bin Jabal Al-Ansari led his companions in the 'Isha’ prayer and he made it long. A man among us went away and prayed by himself. Mu’adh was told about that and he said: 'He is a hypocrite.’ When the man heard about that, he went to the Messenger of Allah and told him what Mu’adh had said to him. The Prophet said: 'Do you want to be a cause of Fitnah (trial, tribulation), O Mu’adh? When you lead the people in prayer, recite "By the sun and its brightness,"Ash-Shams 91 and "Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High," Al-A’la 87 and "By the night as it envelopes," Al-Lail 92 and "Recite in the Name of your Lord.’"Al-'Alaq

QUICK LESSONS:
Be careful with your words; Respect authority figures; Recite four specific verses from Qur'an during prayer

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of reciting certain verses from the Quran during prayer and avoiding causing fitnah or tribulation by speaking without knowledge. Muadh bin Jabal Al-Ansari was leading his companions in prayer when a man left to pray on his own. Muadh said he was a hypocrite, but when this man told Prophet Muhammad what happened, he warned Muadh not to cause fitnah with his words. He then instructed him to recite four specific verses from the Quran while leading prayers - “By the sun and its brightness” [Ash-Shams 91], “Glorify the Name of your Lord Most High” [Al-Ala 87], “By night as it envelopes” [Al-Lail 92] and “Recite in Name of your Lord” [Al-'Alaq]. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful with our words, especially when we are in positions of authority like leading prayers, as they can have serious consequences if used wrongly. We should also strive to recite these four verses during our prayers for their spiritual benefits.
