Sahih al-Bukhari 3155 (Book 57, Hadith 63) #3017
Prohibiting Eating Donkeys' Meat

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited the eating of donkeys' meat, even during times of hunger.

Narrated Ibn Abi 'Aufa: We were afflicted with hunger during the besiege of Khaibar, and when it was the day of (the battle of) Khaibar, we slaughtered the donkeys and when the pots got boiling (with their meat). Allah's Apostle made an announcement that all the pots should be upset and that nobody should eat anything of the meat of the donkeys. We thought that the Prophet prohibited that because the Khumus had not been taken out of the booty (ie donkeys); other people said, "He prohibited eating them for ever". The sub-narrator added, "I asked Sa'id bin Jubair who said, 'He has made the eating of donkeys' meat illegal for ever")

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey Allah's commands even in difficult times such as hunger or poverty .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the prohibition of eating donkeys’ meat. It was narrated by Ibn Abi 'Aufa that during a time of hunger, when they were besieging Khaibar, they slaughtered some donkeys and started to cook them in pots. However, Allah's Apostle made an announcement that all the pots should be overturned and nobody should eat anything from the meat of the donkeys. This was because Khumus had not been taken out from it yet as booty. Some people said that this prohibition was for ever while others said it was only temporary until Khumus could be taken out from it as booty. Sa'id bin Jubair later confirmed that this prohibition is for ever and not just temporary. This hadith teaches us to obey Allah's commands even in difficult times such as hunger or poverty and to never compromise on our faith or values no matter what situation we are in.
