Sunan Ibn Majah 644 (Book 1, Hadith 378) #29996
Restrictions on Menstruating Women in Islam

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the restrictions placed on menstruating women by the Jews and how Allah revealed a verse to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that allowed them to do everything except sexual intercourse.

It was narrated from Anas that: The Jews would not sit with a menstruating woman in a house, nor eat with her, nor drink with her. That was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah, then Allah revealed the words: "They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is a harmful thing, therefore keep away from women during menses". The Messenger of Allah said: "Do everything except sexual intercourse".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the restrictions placed on menstruating women by Jews and how Allah revealed a verse to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). According to this hadith, Jews would not sit with a menstruating woman in a house nor eat or drink with her. However, when this was mentioned to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Allah revealed the words “They ask you concerning menstruation. Say that is a harmful thing therefore keep away from women during menses”. The Messenger of Allah then said “Do everything except sexual intercourse” which means that while it is important for men and women to maintain their modesty and hijab during this time period, they are still allowed to interact with each other as long as it does not involve any physical contact or marriage. This teaches us that even though there are certain restrictions placed upon us due to our faith, we should still be able to live our lives normally without feeling isolated or excluded from society.
