Wiping Over Leather Socks and Head Cover for Ablution

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaching a man how to perform ablution by wiping over his leather socks and head cover.

It was narrated that Abu Muslim, the freed slave of Zaid bin Suhan, said: "I was with Salman, and he saw a man removing his leather socks for ablution. Salman said to him" 'Wipe over your leather socks and your head cover, and your forehead, for I saw the Messenger of Allah wiping over his leather socks and head cover'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's teachings on how to perform ablution. It was narrated that Abu Muslim saw a man removing his leather socks for ablution and Salman told him to wipe over his leather socks and head cover as he saw the Messenger of Allah doing so. This teaches us that it is permissible in Islam to wipe over one's leather socks and head cover when performing ablution instead of washing them every time. It also shows us that we should follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad who taught us this way of performing wudu. Furthermore, it teaches us that we should be mindful when giving advice or instructions as Salman gave this advice with wisdom and kindness rather than scolding or reprimanding him for not knowing what to do.
