Wiping Over Leather Socks

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the ruling of wiping over leather socks for a resident and a traveler.

It was narrated that Shuraih bin Hani' said: "I asked 'Aishah about wiping over the leather socks and she said: 'Go to 'Ali and ask him, for he knows more about that than I do'. So I went to 'Ali and asked him about wiping. He said: 'The Messenger of Allah used to tell us that the resident could wipe for one day and one night, and the traveler could do so for three days'."
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْقَاسِمَ بْنَ مُخَيْمِرَةَ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ، عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَتِ ائْتِ عَلِيًّا فَسَلْهُ فَإِنَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِذَلِكَ مِنِّي ‏.‏ فَأَتَيْتُ عَلِيًّا فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ فَقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نَمْسَحَ لِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً وَلِلْمُسَافِرِ ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the ruling of wiping over leather socks for a resident and a traveler. According to this hadith, it was narrated by Shuraih bin Hani’ that he asked ‘Aishah about wiping over the leather socks and she said to go ask ‘Ali as he knows more about it than her. When Shuraih asked ‘Ali, he said that the Messenger of Allah used to tell them that the resident could wipe for one day and one night, while the traveler could do so for three days. This hadith teaches us that we should seek knowledge from those who are knowledgeable in order to gain accurate information on religious matters. It also teaches us that we should be mindful of our actions when travelling or residing in order to fulfill our religious obligations correctly.
