This hadith discusses the permissibility of wiping over leather socks, which is a practice that was done by the Prophet Muhammad and his companions during their time. They both went to 'Umar for a verdict on this matter, to which he replied that they used to do this when they were with the Messenger of Allah and there was nothing wrong with it, even if one has defecated beforehand. This shows us that wiping over leather socks is permissible in Islam, as long as one does not take off their shoes or socks completely before doing so.
