Sahih al-Bukhari 3115 (Book 57, Hadith 24) #2978
Naming Children After the Prophet (ﷺ)

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised a man to name his son after him, but not to use his Kunya.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari: A man amongst us begot a boy whom he named Al-Qasim. On that the Ansar said, (to the man), "We will never call you Abu-al-Qasim and will never please you with this blessed title". So, he went to the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! I have begotten a boy whom I named Al-Qasim and the Ansar said, 'We will never call you Abu-al-Qasim, nor will we please you with this title'. " The Prophet said, "The Ansar have done well. Name by my name, but do not name by my Kunya, for I am Qasim".

QUICK LESSONS:
Remembering & honoring Prophets & Messengers of Allah SWT through using their names instead of taking on exclusive titles & nicknames reserved only for them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about naming children after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. A man named his son Al-Qasim and the Ansar said they would not call him Abu-al-Qasim nor please him with this title. The Prophet ﷺ then advised that he should name by his name, but not by his Kunya as he was Qasim. A Kunya is a nickname or title given to someone based on their first born child's name, such as Abu Bakr meaning "father of Bakr". It is important for Muslims to remember that we should never take on any titles or names which are exclusive to the Prophets and Messengers of Allah SWT, such as calling ourselves "Abu" something or using any other titles which are exclusive only for them. We can however use their names in remembrance of them and in order to gain blessings from Allah SWT through them.
