Permissibility of Seawater and Dead Meat

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) allowed the use of seawater for ablution and the consumption of dead meat.

It was narrated that Ibn Firasi said: "I was fishing and I had a vessel with me in which I kept water, and I used seawater for ablution. I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah and he said: 'Its water is a means of purification, and its dead meat is permissible'."
حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ أَبِي سَهْلٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ سَوَادَةَ، عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ مَخْشِيٍّ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْفِرَاسِيِّ، قَالَ كُنْتُ أَصِيدُ وَكَانَتْ لِي قِرْبَةٌ أَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَاءً وَإِنِّي تَوَضَّأْتُ بِمَاءِ الْبَحْرِ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ ـ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ هُوَ الطَّهُورُ مَاؤُهُ الْحِلُّ مَيْتَتُهُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the permissibility of using seawater for ablution and consuming dead meat. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked by Ibn Firasi if it was permissible to use seawater for ablution while he was fishing. The Prophet replied that its water is a means of purification and its dead meat is permissible. This hadith teaches us that we should not be wasteful with our resources as even something like seawater can be used for purification purposes. It also teaches us to be mindful when consuming food as even something like dead meat can be consumed if it has been properly prepared according to Islamic guidelines.
