Sunan Ibn Majah 385 (Book 1, Hadith 119) #29737
Mixing Dates and Water

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that it is permissible to mix dates and water together.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas that : On the night of the Jinn the Messenger of Allah said to Ibn Mas'ud: "Do you have water?" He said: "No, only some Nabidh in a large water skin". The Messenger of Allah said: "Good dates and pure water". (ie there is no harm from the mixing of the two) Pour it for me". He said: "So I performed ablution with it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Mix certain things together when permissible

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates an incident in which the Prophet Muhammad was travelling with his companion Ibn Mas’ud. When they stopped for a break, the Prophet asked if there was any water available. Ibn Mas’ud replied that he only had some Nabidh in a large water skin. The Nabidh is a type of drink made from dates or raisins soaked in water overnight. The Prophet then said “Good dates and pure water” meaning that it was permissible to mix the two together for ablution purposes. This teaches us that mixing certain things together can be permissible even though they are usually kept separate such as food and drink or different types of clothing items. It also shows us the importance of cleanliness as the Prophet used this mixture to perform ablution before prayer even though he could have done so without it if necessary.
