Privacy and Discretion in Relieving Oneself

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would go out of sight to relieve himself while on a journey.

It was narrated that Jabir said: "We went out on a journey with the Messenger of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah would not relieve himself until he had disappeared and could not be seen by anyone".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى، أَنْبَأَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ ـ فِي سَفَرٍ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ لاَ يَأْتِي الْبَرَازَ حَتَّى يَتَغَيَّبَ فَلاَ يُرَى

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of privacy and discretion when relieving oneself. It was narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah that he went on a journey with the Messenger of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad would not relieve himself until he had disappeared from view so that no one could see him. This teaches us that we should be mindful of our surroundings when relieving ourselves and ensure that we are not seen by anyone else. We should also take care to ensure our privacy is respected at all times. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us about being discreet in our actions as it shows how even the Prophet Muhammad was careful to make sure no one saw him while relieving himself.
