Ablution and Bathing of the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad used to perform ablution with a Mudd (of water) and bath with a Sa'.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "The Messenger of Allah used to perform ablution with a Mudd (of water) and bath with a Sa'".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، عَنْ هَمَّامٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ شَيْبَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ يَتَوَضَّأُ بِالْمُدِّ وَيَغْتَسِلُ بِالصَّاعِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the ablution and bathing habits of the Prophet Muhammad. It was narrated by 'Aishah that the Messenger of Allah used to perform ablution with a Mudd, which is an Arabic unit of measurement equivalent to approximately two quarts, and bathe with a Sa', which is an Arabic unit of measurement equivalent to approximately four quarts. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful in our use of water when performing ablutions or taking baths. We should not waste water but use it judiciously as per Islamic teachings. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us that we should follow in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad in all aspects including his habits related to cleanliness and hygiene.
