Jami at-Tirmidhi 3816 (Book 49, Hadith 216) #29478
Appointing Leaders with Love

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ was sending an army and appointed Usamah bin Zaid as its leader, but the people contested his leadership. The Prophet ﷺ then reminded them that Usamah's father was also fit for leadership and that he is one of the most beloved people to him.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: that the Messenger of Allah sent and army and put Usamah bin Zaid in charge of them. So the people contested his leadership, so the Prophet said: 'If you contest his leadership, then you did contest the leadership of his father before him. And indeed, by Allah, he was certainly fit for leadership, and he was of the most beloved of people to me, and this one is among the most beloved of people to me after him'."
