This hadith is about the Prophet's recognition of two of his companions, Abu Bakr and Umar. He praised them by saying that they were "the hearing" and "the seeing". This means that they were attentive to what was being said around them as well as aware of their surroundings. It also implies that these two companions had a keen sense of understanding which enabled them to be successful in their endeavors. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our environment as well as pay attention to what is being said so we can gain knowledge from it. Additionally, it encourages us to strive for excellence in all aspects of life so we can become successful like Abu Bakr and Umar.
