Sahih al-Bukhari 3064 (Book 56, Hadith 269) #2929
Betrayal of Martyrs

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) sent seventy men from the Ansar to help some tribes who had embraced Islam, but they were betrayed and martyred. The Prophet (ﷺ) invoked evil on the tribe for one month in prayer.

Narrated Anas: The people of the tribes of Ril, Dhakwan, 'Usiya and Bani Lihyan came to the Prophet and claimed that they had embraced Islam, and they requested him to support them with some men to fight their own people. The Prophet supported them with seventy men from the Ansar whom we used to call Al-Qurra'(ie Scholars) who (out of piety) used to cut wood during the day and pray all the night. So, those people took the (seventy) men till they reached a place called Bi'r-Ma'ana where they betrayed and martyred them. So, the Prophet invoked evil on the tribe of Ril, Dhakwan and Bani Lihyan for one month in the prayer. Narrated Qatada: Anas told us that they (ie Muslims) used to recite a Quranic Verse concerning those martyrs which was:-- "O Allah! Let our people be informed on our behalf that we have met our Lord Who has got pleased with us and made us pleased". Then the Verse was cancelled.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a group of people from four different tribes who came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and claimed that they had accepted Islam. The Prophet ﷺ then sent seventy men from the Ansar to help them fight their own people. However, when they reached a place called Bi’r Ma’ana, these seventy men were betrayed and martyred by those same people whom they were helping. As a result, the Prophet ﷺ invoked evil upon these four tribes for one month in his prayers. This hadith teaches us that we should never betray or harm those who are trying to help us as it will only bring bad consequences upon us in this world and hereafter. We should also be grateful for any kind of help we receive from others and not take it for granted or misuse it as it can lead to dire consequences like what happened with these four tribes mentioned in this hadith.
