Returning with Repentance and Praise

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ would return from a trip and recite a phrase expressing his repentance, worship, and praise to God.

That whenever the Prophet would return from a trip, he would say: “(We are) Returning, repenting, worshipping, and to our Lord directing the praise (A’ibuna ta’buna `abiduna lirabbina ḥamidun).”
حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، أَنْبَأَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الرَّبِيعَ بْنَ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ كَانَ إِذَا قَدِمَ مِنْ سَفَرٍ قَالَ ‏ "‏ آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏ وَرَوَى الثَّوْرِيُّ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ فِيهِ عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ الْبَرَاءِ وَرِوَايَةُ شُعْبَةَ أَصَحُّ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَأَنَسٍ وَجَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ

EXPLANATIONS:
Upon returning from a journey, the Prophet (ﷺ) would recite a phrase expressing his repentance for any wrongdoings he may have committed during his travels. He also expressed his worship of God by praising Him for His blessings. This hadith teaches us that we should always be mindful of our actions and strive to repent for any wrongdoings we may have done. We should also remember to thank God for all the blessings He has bestowed upon us in our lives.
