Supplicating to Allah in Times of Stress

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) would raise his head up towards the sky and say "Glory is to Allah, the Magnificent" when he was worried and would say "O the Living, O Sustainer" when he was striving in supplication.

Abu Hurairah narrated that: When a matter would worry the Prophet , he would raise his head up toward the sky and say: "Glory is to Allah, the Magnificent (Subḥan Allahil-'Aẓim)". And when he would strive in supplication; he would say: "O the Living, O Sustainer (Ya Ḥayyu ya Qayyum)".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، يَحْيَى بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ الْمَدَنِيُّ وَغَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي فُدَيْكٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ، عَنِ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ كَانَ إِذَا أَهَمَّهُ الأَمْرُ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَإِذَا اجْتَهَدَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ قَالَ ‏"‏ يَا حَىُّ يَا قَيُّومُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to respond when he was faced with a difficult situation or feeling stressed. He would raise his head up towards the sky and glorify Allah by saying “Subhanallahi al-A’la” which translates to “Glory is to Allah, The Most High”. This phrase is often used as an expression of awe and reverence for God's greatness. When striving in supplication, he would call out “Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum” which translates to “O Living One, O Self-Existing One”. This phrase expresses a deep connection between man and God as it acknowledges that only through Him can we find solace from our worries and stresses. Through this hadith we learn that no matter what difficulty we face in life, we should always turn our attention towards God for comfort and guidance.
