Jami at-Tirmidhi 3317 (Book 47, Hadith 369) #28966
Kindness to Family Despite Disagreements

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that even though family members may not accept the religion of Islam, believers should still be kind and patient with them.

Ikrimah narrated that : Ibn Abbas was asked by a man about this Ayah: O you who believe! Verity, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you; therefore beware of them! He said: "These are men who submitted (to Islam) in Makkah, and they wanted to come to the Prophet but their wives and children refused to allow them to come to the Messenger of Allah. So when they came to the Messenger of Allah, they saw that the people had gained such understanding in the religion that they wanted to punish them (their families). So Allah revealed the Ayah: O you who believe! Verily, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you; therefore beware of them!"

QUICK LESSONS:
Show kindness and patience towards one's family despite disagreements .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how believers should treat their families even if they do not agree with their religious beliefs. It is narrated by Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas who was asked about a verse in the Quran which states “O you who believe! Verity, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you; therefore beware of them!” The answer given was that this verse was revealed when some people wanted to come to the Prophet but their families refused to let them go. Even though these family members did not accept Islam, Allah commanded believers to be kind and patient with them. This teaches us that we should always show kindness and patience towards our families no matter what disagreements we may have with them. We must remember that Allah loves those who are kind and merciful towards others, especially our own family members.
