Jami at-Tirmidhi 3304 (Book 47, Hadith 356) #28953
Selflessness in Hospitality

SUMMARY: A man from the Ansar had a guest spend the night with him, but he did not have enough food to feed both his family and the guest. He gave preference to his guest over himself and his family, even though they were in need of that.

Abu Hurairah narrated: That a man from the Ansar had a guest spend the night with him, but he did not have anything to eat but his meal and the meal for his children, so he said to his wife: 'Put the children to sleep, extinguish the torches, and give me whatever you have with you for the guest.’ So this Ayah was revealed: And they give preference over themselves even though they were in need of that".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about hospitality and generosity towards guests. It tells us that we should be willing to give up our own needs for those of our guests, even if it means going without ourselves. The man from the Ansar was willing to put aside his own needs and those of his children in order to provide for a stranger who was visiting him. This is an example of selfless hospitality which is highly praised by Allah SWT as mentioned in this ayah from the Quran. We can learn from this hadith that we should always be generous towards our guests, no matter what our circumstances are or how much we have available for them. We should also remember that Allah SWT will reward us for any good deeds done out of kindness or generosity towards others, so it is important to always strive to do good deeds whenever possible.
